  1. The first PhD-holder in mathematics from Uganda, Dr Paul Edward T. Mugabi, graduated in 1970 at University of Rochester, USA; 17 graduated Ugandan PhD’s in mathematics, out of which 3 had obtained their degree from Uganda (the first one graduated in 1995).

  2. The first PhD-holder in mathematics from Kenya, Dr Shem Arungu-Olende, graduated in 1968 at University of London, UK; 52 Kenyan PhD’s in mathematics, out of which 17 had graduated in Kenya (the first one graduated in 1985).

  3. The first PhD-holder in mathematics from Tanzania, Dr Hussein M. Karanda, graduated in 1973 in the USSR (university not mentioned); 33 Tanzanian PhD’s in mathematics, out of which 3 had graduated in Tanzania (the first one graduated in 1974).

  4. The first PhD-holder in mathematics from Zambia, Dr Patrick Azele Phiri, got the degree in 1979 from University of Leeds, UK; 11 Zambian PhD’s in mathematics, but none with a degree from Zambia;

  5. The first PhD-holder in mathematics from Rwanda, Dr Augustin Banyaga, got the degree in 1976 from Université de Genève, Switzerland; 11 Rwandese PhD’s in mathematics, but none with a degree from Rwanda.
